SECTION N. RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
INTRODUCTION
The condition and amount of recreational opportunities a county can
offer its residents and visitors the higher the quality of life is and more
tourism the county will see.
Providing the most up-to-date facilities is an important sector of
life for Lee County, without these facilities fewer visitors and potential
revenue the county is likely to see.
This section examines the current recreational facilities throughout
Lee County.
RECREATION
AREAS
Franklin
The City of Franklin has a town square, located between Main and
Broadway and Forth and Fifth Street.
The square has a playground, a shelter house with restrooms, a
basketball court, a volleyball court, and a bus top shelter. There are no recreational trails; however,
there is Wilson Lake Park outside the city limits.
Houghton
The community of Houghton has a 3-acre park available to its
residents. The park consists of
playground equipment, two tennis courts, double basketball court, softball
field, three soccer fields, and an 80 by 30 foot shelter house and
restrooms. The park also has a
concession stand and storage shed.
Donnellson
Donnellson has four recreational facilities for residents.
Depot Park
Located on the 600 block of Main Street, this park consists of the
restored railroad depot, complete with a meeting room and museum of
Donnellson history; basketball court; tennis court and playground
equipment. The park also has a
handicapped accessible shelter house and picnic tables and barbeque
grills. Restrooms are available
during the warm months. The shelter
house is available on a first –come, first-serve basis for picnic
outings. The park boasts a Christmas
display by a local artist, Carole Mueller.
University Athletic Park
Located at the old school building at 714 Orchard Street, this
facility houses a basketball court with an adjoining stage area; a
racquetball court; a weight gym complete with weight-lifting equipment and
cardio equipment. The facility has
men and women locker rooms and sauna.
The facility is also available for private parties.
Green Acres Country Club
Located at 925 Fruit Street, this is a semi-private 9-hole golf
course, which includes a swimming pool and baby pool. The Clubhouse has a
restaurant and dining/meeting room open to the public.
Lee County Fairgrounds
Located on the north edge of town on Highway 218, the fairgrounds host
the weeklong Lee County Fair in July and other various 4-H activities
throughout the year. The Lee County
Speedway is located on the grounds with weekly car races held during the race
season.
Montrose
The community of Montrose has two city parks for residents. The parks consist of various playground
equipment, a new gazebo, and landscaping.
There are no trails within the city limits of Montrose.
St. Paul
The community of St. Paul has one ball diamond with shelter house and
playground equipment for the residents.
West Point
The City maintains three parks in the community and include:
City
Square Park
This park consists of 2.8 acres
in the center of the town and contains a kitchen equipped shelter house,
basketball courts, playground equipment, and benches. A dozen or so full-grown trees provide a
generous amount of shade to the area.
Veterans
Memorial Park
This park is made up primarily
of a lighted ball field sited on 2.5 acres situated on the west side of
town. Established in 1947 by World
War II veterans, other amenities include a swing set, concession stand and bleachers.
South
Park
This park is the town’s newest
and largest park complex sited on 10 acres of land, which include a lighted
ball field and bleachers, two soccer fields, two tennis courts, playground
equipment, shelter house, and an asphalted bike/hike trail leading through a
corridor to the Lee County Conservation Board’s Pollmiller Park. South Park is well maintained and was
established in 1979.
A half-mile bike/hike trail
between West Point and Pollmiller Park starts at the City’s South Park
continuing through a dedicated corridor to the Lee County Conservation
Board’s Park at the town’s outskirts.
The Lee County Conservation Board recently asphalted the trail making
it an all weather trail. It is widely
utilized by city residents.
Keokuk

Lee County
The Lee County Conservation Board
handles 22 recreation and wildlife areas in the county. The following table is a list of
all the recreational facilities and area the Lee County Conservation Board
services.
