The public facilities a
region or community offers its’ residents directly affect the quality of life
in the community. These facilities
also influence the ability of the community to attract new residents and new
growth. Having the knowledge of the
present status of public facilities is important to determine the future
capabilities and cost efficiency of the county. Therefore, public buildings are particularly important in
determining the future capabilities of the county.
County facilities
include the publicly owned land, buildings, and utilities, which serves the
county. The availability, type, and
location of these structures are important to the growth and development of
Lee County.
LEE COUNTY BUILDINGS
'
North Lee County Office Building
Located at 933 Avenue H, in Fort Madison, this
building was built in 1979 out of brick and mortar. IT is a one-story building with 14,000 square feet and is used
as office space.

County Courthouse
Located at 701 Avenue F, in
Fort Madison; this building was built in 1840 out of brick and mortar. It is a two-story building with 14,000
square feet and is used as business space.
South Lee County Courthouse
Located at 25 North 7th Street, in Keokuk; this building
was built in 1916 out of brick and mortar.
The building is three-stories with 18,000 square feet and is used as
office space.
South Lee County Department of Human Services Building
Located at 307 Bank Street, in Keokuk; this one story building was
built in 1989 out of brick and mortar.
The building has 5,000 square feet of office space.
County Attorney Office
Located at 710 Avenue F, in Fort Madison; this one story building was
built in 1977 out of wood and concrete.
The 1,184 square feet is being used for garage and storage space.
Charleston Place
Located at 2416 340th Street, outside of Keokuk. The two-story building is built in 1963
out of Brick and Mortar. The 65,000
square foot facility is currently being used as the Residential Care
Facility. The building is allocated
for closure in June of 2002.
Charleston Place Water Tower
Located at 2416 340th Street, outside of Keokuk. The steel water storage was built in
1930. The water tower is currently
empty and shut of from existing distribution system in 2001. Rathbun Rural Water is the primary source
for the area now. There is no need
for the tower.
Lee County Correctional Center
Located at 2530 255th Street, Montrose; this one-story building was
built in 1981 out of brick and mortar.
The 14,000 square feet is used as the Correctional Facility.
Lee County Correctional Facility- Mobile Unit
Located at 2530 255th Street, Montrose; this converted truck trailer
was built in 1995. The 360 square
feet of space is used to house inmates.
Lee County Correctional Facility- Walk Way
Located at 2530 255th Street, Montrose. The walkway was built in 1995 and covers 300 square feet.
Lee County Correctional Facility- Evidence Garage
Located at 2530 255th Street, Montrose. The one-story building was built in 1983 out of wood, and is
180 square feet.

building was built in 1985 out of wood.
The 500 square feet building is used as a storage and washhouse.
Old Lee County Jail
Located at 711 Avenue F,
in Fort Madison. The building was
built in 1847 with brick and mortar.
The 3,000 square feet is currently not in use. There is a partial demolition being
performed in 2001, with the removal of the sheriff’s house, kitchen addition
and block office addition. The remaining
stone cell block is planned to be a museum and is currently leased to the North
Lee County Historic Society.
Heritage Center
Located at 508-510 Main Street, in Keokuk. The two-story building was built in 1900 out of brick and
mortar. The 6,000 square foot
building is used as a senior citizen center and labor hall.
Newberry Center
Located at 728-730 Avenue G, in Fort Madison. The two-story building was built in 1900
out of brick and mortar. The 5,000
square feet building is used at a senior citizen center and labor hall.
Charleston Place Arts and Crafts Building
Located at 2416 340th Street, outside of Keokuk. The one-story building was built in 1965
out of steel. The building’s 2,500
square feet is used for education, arts and crafts.
Estes Park Gazebo
Located at 502 Main Street, in Keokuk. The gazebo was built in 1993 out of wood. The gazebo has 200 square feet and is used
for outdoor recreation.
Central Point of Coordination Condominiums
Located at 329 Avenue G,
in Fort Madison. The one-story
building was built in 1994 out of wood. The building’s 1,400 square feet is
used for residential units.
