    Fifth Grade

    Life on the Prairie

    Students will learn about prairies and what life would have been like on the prairie by participating in everyday pioneer activities.

     

    Who’s on the Dollar Coin?

    Students will learn about Sacajawea and the dollar coin.  They will also play a Lewis and Clark Expedition board game.

     

    Those Who Dared

    Learn about the pioneers journey West by participating in an activity involving purchasing products from a general store to survive along the trail.

     

    The Sum of All Parts

    Students will develop their very own section of riverfront property and discover how everyone contributes to the pollution problem.  The Enviroscape model will be used.

     

    Geology Rocks!

    Students will have fun moving graham crackers and peanut butter to demonstrate plate tectonics and learn how volcanoes and islands are formed.  This is a great introduction to any earth science unit.

     

    Tracks, Tracks, Tracks

    Students will read animal clues and look at their tracks.  They will also have a chance to make plaster tracks to keep.

     

    A Look At Aluminum

    Students will understand the difference in the amount of energy needed to produce aluminum form ore as opposed to recycling it.  They will learn how the properties of aluminum make it invaluable for many products. Also, how technologies depend on it and be able to describe the steps in processing aluminum.  Students will also discuss the environmental impacts of new aluminum and recycled aluminum.

     

    Wild in Iowa Trunk Review

    Seventeen Wild in Iowa trunks are available for use, free of charge, to any Lee County school, grades K-6.  For any trunk, you may arrange a classroom visit with the naturalists to give a brief overview of the trunk or do a specific activity.
