Fifth Grade
Life on the Prairie
Students will learn about prairies and what life
would have been like on the prairie by participating in everyday pioneer
activities.
Who’s on the Dollar Coin?
Students will learn about Sacajawea and the dollar
coin. They will also play a Lewis and
Clark Expedition board game.
Those Who Dared
Learn about the pioneers journey West by
participating in an activity involving purchasing products from a general
store to survive along the trail.
The Sum of All Parts
Students will develop their very own section of
riverfront property and discover how everyone contributes to the pollution
problem. The Enviroscape model will be used.
Geology Rocks!
Students will have fun moving graham crackers and
peanut butter to demonstrate plate tectonics and learn how volcanoes and
islands are formed. This is a great
introduction to any earth science unit.
Tracks, Tracks, Tracks
Students will read animal clues and look at their
tracks. They will also have a chance
to make plaster tracks to keep.
A Look At Aluminum
Students will understand the difference in the
amount of energy needed to produce aluminum form ore as opposed to recycling
it. They will learn how the
properties of aluminum make it invaluable for many products. Also, how technologies
depend on it and be able to describe the steps in processing aluminum. Students will also discuss the
environmental impacts of new aluminum and recycled aluminum.
Wild in Iowa Trunk Review
Seventeen Wild in
Iowa trunks are available for use, free of charge, to any Lee
County school, grades K-6. For any
trunk, you may arrange a classroom visit with the naturalists to give a brief
overview of the trunk or do a specific activity.
