    Second Grade

    Bald Eagles

    Students will learn about the majestic Bald Eagle through stories, demonstrations, and compare their arms length with an eagle’s wingspan.  They will also make a bald eagle photo album.

     

    What’s Wild and Lives in Iowa?

    Students will follow tracks around the room and find clues about different wild Iowa animals.  They will discover the mystery animal at the end of each track.  (This requires about 15 minutes of setup time)

               

    Screech Owl at Midnight Hollow

    Screech Owl at Midnight Hollow will be read.  Students will discover more about the elusive, nocturnal owl through owl mounts, owl pellets, wings and feet, and make a screech owl call out of a plastic cups.

               

    The Decomposing Log

    The “Logs Life” story will be read and students will demonstrate the life cycle of a tree.  Students will also have the chance to dig into a decomposing log.  Optional:  make soil snacks with pudding, oreo cookies, and gummi worms.

     

    Insects

    Students will get a close-up look at various insects, listen to a story, and make a camouflage insect.  If you would like a specific insect covered, please let us know.  

     

    Bats

    Students will see Iowa bat mounts, listen to The Great Ball Game A Muskogee Story, and learn  how bats hunt for their food by playing the Bat & Moth Game.

     

    Recycle

    Students will learn the basics of recycling, they will be in groups and given a bag of garbage to determine what can and can’t be recycled.  They will also discuss ways of reducing the amounts of garbage that they use of an everyday basis.

     

    Wild in Iowa Trunk Review

    Seventeen Wild in Iowa trunks are available for use, free of charge, to any Lee County school, grades K-6.  For any trunk, you may arrange a classroom visit with the naturalists to give a brief overview of the trunk or do a specific activity.
