Seventh
& Eighth Grade
400 Acre Wood Management
Plan
A land use activity involving the multiple use
management of a 400 acre state forest.
Students will be able to make decisions and take into account factors such
as the ecosystem stability, economics, wildlife, water, and visitors.
January Thaw
Students will study and do a winter animal signs
activity based on Aldo Leopold’s, A Sand
County Almanac.
Endangered Species Reintroduction
Program
Students will learn more about the trumpeter swan,
bobcat, and river otter reintroduction programs.
Hydrology; The Sum of All Parts
Students will discover how everyone contributes to
the pollution of a river as it flows through a watershed. The Enviroscape
model will also be used to demonstrate watershed pollution and conservation
practices.
Mississippi River Mussels
Students will evaluate how mussel populations have
changed due to Mississippi River management decisions and commercial values.
Neo-tropical Migrants
Students will do activities about why birds migrate
and why the protection of rainforests in South America is important.
Wild in Iowa Trunk Review
Seventeen Wild in
Iowa trunks are available for use, free of charge, to any Lee
County school. For any trunk, you may
arrange a classroom visit with the naturalists to give a brief overview of
the trunk or do a specific activity.
