Sixth Grade
Backyard Birds
Students will learn to identify common backyard
birds, listen to their calls, learn interesting facts, and play bird bingo.
Archeology
Students will become members of imaginary Native American
tribes and decorate a piece of clay pottery with tribal information. The clay pottery will then be broken and
another group will become archeologists and attempt to put the pottery back
together and discover the other tribes information.
Teacher provided materials:
Tacky glue, markers, crayons, newspaper (to cover desks)
Iowa Fish
Students will learn fish anatomy and Iowa fish
identification. They will test
their ID skills by playing a fish relay game.
Native American Activities
Students will learn about Native American culture
through crafts and Native American games.
Trees
Students will learn how a tree functions and the
part of a tree. They will also
participate in a tree ring dating activity.
Worm Composting
Students will learn about worm composting by making
their own soda bottle worm composts.
They will learn hands on how to take care of a compost pile and reduce
their amount of waste that would normally go to a landfill.
Teacher provides the following materials: three 2-liter soda bottles per group (the
class can do one or two columns for the entire class or one for each group of
4-5 students), newspaper, and two bags of potting soil
