    DRY CREEK WATERSHED PROJECT

    By Frank Mohrfeld

Dry Creek…should possibly be renamed Wet Creek.  The area known as the Dry Creek watershed is approximately 1,00 acres and is located in Washington Township, its boundaries are along Chalk Ridge Road to the East, Hwy 103 to the West and North of Avenue A.  Problems occur when there is a downpour or continuous rains, the runoff water runs rapidly down the hill and through several residential areas in the city of Fort Madison and outlets directly into the Mississippi River.  The primary concern identified is flooding due to excess runoff, resulting in excessive stream bank erosion within the residential areas.  Compounding this problem further, excess sediment and woody debris collects at the lower end of the stream, which only contributes to the flooding problems.

Lee County Soil and Water Conservation District applied for a grant through the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Watershed Protection Development Grant Program and received the grant to educate landowners about water management practices and identify those interested in participating if 50%-75% cost share funding become available.  Water management practices that could reduce runoff and sedimentation include water and sediment control basins, terraces, grade stabilization structures, ponds, stream bank stabilization, riparian areas and forestry enhancement.  Also included in this project is community based education efforts designed to inform community leaders and developers more about land use considerations  and residents about the importance of water quality.

In order to accomplish this task, a number of organizations will come together and become dedicated partners with one common goal – water management.  Lee County Emergency Management was asked to coordinate, research and compile data for this project.  Once research is complete and the interest level of all involved – a second grant will be submitted for construction of water management practices.
