Due to the rising costs to dispose of appliances the City of Keokuk will no longer accept appliances during the spring and fall citywide cleanups.  Beginning April 7, 2003, residents that pay to have their garbage picked up by the City of Keokuk can purchase an appliance collection sticker at City Hall and local retail stores for $15.00.  Residents may then call city offices to schedule a pick up of the appliance.

Appliances include but are not limited to:  Washers, dryers, water heaters, freezers, dishwashers, stove/ranges, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, air conditioners, furnaces and microwaves.

The following rules will apply to all appliances being picked up by the City of Keokuk.

          ·  You must call to schedule a pickup of an appliance.

          ·  The appliance may not be placed out more than twelve hours prior to a scheduled pickup.

          ·  The sticker will need to be affixed to the appliance where it can be easily seen by the driver.

          ·  For safety reasons, doors must be removed from appliances prior to placing out for pickup.

          ·  Appliances must not be mangled or lines cut.

          ·  Place the appliance at the normal garbage pickup location.  A separate truck will pick up the

              appliance.

The stickers contain a special tamper proof adhesive so if removed from the appliance will leave the words VOID on the appliance, also the word VOID will appear on the removed sticker leaving it unusable.

Following are some suggestions on other ways to dispose of appliances:

    • Appliances may be taken to the Lee County Transfer Station; a disposal fee will apply.

    • When purchasing a new appliance, ask the appliance dealer if they will remove your old appliance.

    • If the appliance is still in working order, call a local charity to see if they can use it.

If you have questions call City Hall at 524-2050.
