We provide Substance Abuse Prevention Education that reaches the entire community. We provide in-the-classroom education to Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, Second Grade, Fifth and Seventh Grades and Tenth Grade students of Lee County using research-based curriculum held in high regards by the U.S. Department of Education. We also provide prevention education at community events and to community groups.
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
We will use our "Safety Kids" puppets to capture attention and create an entertaining and fun learning environment to teach the Michigan Model including:
- the definition of a drug
- medicines as drugs
- choosing not to smoke
- poisons
- saying "NO" to drugs
Second Grade
We will also use our "Safety Kids" puppets at this grade level to capture attention and create an entertaining and fun learning environment to teach the Michigan Model including:
- medicines and other substances containing drugs
- effects of nicotine, caffiene, alcohol, second hand smoke
- how smoke enters the lungs
- the effects of alcohol on physical tasks or activities
- saying "NO" to drugs
Fifth and Seventh Grades
We will use a variety of curriculums including:
- Life Skills Training (LST), a fifteen lesson curriculum aimed at teaching prevention-related information, promoting anti-drug norms, teaching drug refusal skills and fostering the development of personal self-management skills and general social skills
- two fast-paced, entertaining videos that also provide personal experience stories
- in-class demonstrations, such as showing the effects of tobacco on a human lung using a simulated smoker's lung
- a realistic, hand-painted model, called the "Consequences of Drug Use" display case, which dramatizes the effects of drug use on eight organs of the body
Tenth Grade
At this very important age for education, we will use a module from the Michigan Model - "Teen Voice Solutions," which includes:
- legal issues of alcohol, drug and tobacco use
- applying problem-solving skills
- solutions for reducing use among adolescents
- analyzing the impact of substance abuse on the school and community
- sharing this gained education with the community
Although we will not be providing in-the-classroom education to all grade levels, we will provide education in other forms to reach all age levels, such as:
- assemblies involving entire school districts
- teen groups to assist in the education of the younger children, complimenting the elementary curriculum and allowing teens to act as peer leaders in their high schools
- "Rock In Prevention" program that provides training and assembly style workshops through the powerful medium of music
- education at community events and to community groups, including "Relay for Life," "Red Ribbon Week," county fairs, festivals, YMCA youth programs, Girl Scout events, Boy Scout events, church groups and after-school events
