    Lee County Health Department Environmental Services was established in Lee County in 1970. It became a program of the Lee County Health Department in 2000 and is located within the same building at 2218 Avenue H in Fort Madison, Iowa.

    Inspections

    • Food inspections of restaurants, taverns, grocery stores, convenience stores, concession stands, warehouses, food processing plants, schools, correctional facilities, temporary food stands, mobile units, vending machines, nutrition program sites, assisted living facilities, and home food establishments in Lee and Henry counties.
    • Hotel inspections, including bed and breakfast inns, in Lee and Henry counties.
    • Public pool and spa inspections are provided in Lee, Henry and Van Buren counties.
    • Inspections of tanning beds, funeral homes and tattoo parlors in Lee, Henry and Van Buren counties.
    • Onsite sewer system inspections, recommendations and site surveys.
    • Private water well permits and inspections, including heat pump wells and monitor wells.

    Licenses and Permits

    Please remember to contact our office at least 30 days prior to:

    • opening a new establishment
    • changing ownership of an existing establishment
    • changing location of an existing establishment
    We will be happy to answer any questions or do a walk through of the facility with you to make licensing and compliance with the regulations as easy as possible.

    Testing

    • Testing of private water wells for bacteria and nitrates.
    • Home testing kits for radon are available at the Lee County Health Department for a $5.00 fee.

    Education and Information

    • Food Service Certification Course offered to food establishment owners, operators and employees.
    • Inservice training and education upon request to food establishments and swimming pools.
    • Lead Poisoning Prevention Program with Lee County Community Nursing, including monitoring lead poisoned children and preventing exposure to lead.
    • Radon awareness in Lee County.
    • Proper closure of abandoned wells.
