Great River Regional Waste
Authority is a public sector agency serving the waste management needs of Lee
and Henry counties. Operations include:
Sanitary Landfill - located
across from the Rodeo Arena in Fort Madison. This is the main facility where
solid waste is received daily. Administrative offices are located here as well.
Recycling Center - located
at the main facility in Fort Madison. Recyclables may be dropped off 24 hours a
day here. Recyclables are then sorted, baled and shipped to numerous markets
throughout the United States. Organics
Recycling - is a program where wood and yard waste materials are
separated and processed to produce mulches and compost.
Transfer Station & Recycling Center - located
in Keokuk, is a solid waste drop-off site where waste is accepted just like the
main facility, only it is loaded onto trucks daily and transported to Fort
Madison for disposal in the landfill. Recyclables may be dropped off only during
business hours. Household Hazardous
Waste Collection Center - located in Ft. Madison. It is open
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM and residents can make
appointments any day to drop off their material.
Solid Waste Information
As generators of solid waste, we are also responsible for its safe disposal. In
the past, it was easier to maintain an attitude of out of sight, out of mind
about the trash we produced, but now, faced with increasing environmental
problems, we must find better solutions to solid waste disposal than land
filling.
Our goal is to provide information to recycling and other solid waste services,
in order to make further strides in our waste reduction effort.
